I love taking photos and sharing them on Instagram or Threads. I’m proud of my photography and always strive to improve. But I recently realized that I haven’t been taking pictures much lately. The last photo I took was on October 21—just 10 days ago.
Hmm, not as long ago as I thought, but I definitely feel like I’ve been taking pictures less often than before. When I first arrived in Canada, I took photos every single day. I carried my camera, an OM-D E-M10 Mark III, everywhere—even to school. I would capture moments throughout the day. But now, I don’t bring my camera when I go out, only when I go hiking or somewhere I know will be photo-worthy. A week ago, I went to a house party. If it had been three years ago, I definitely would have brought my camera, but I didn’t. Has my passion already faded?
For me, taking photos is about capturing the moment. Whenever I look back at a photo, I can relive that memory. I don’t want to lose this passion, so I need to dig deeper and understand why I haven’t been taking pictures lately.
1. It’s Big and Heavy
I bought a new camera this year, the Sony A7C II, which is an amazing camera. But for me, it’s a bit too big to carry everywhere. Sometimes, I just want to go out without worrying about lugging around a heavy camera. So, the size of the camera might be a factor.
2. The Editing Process is Tiring
After taking photos, I usually edit them in Adobe Lightroom. I enjoy this process, but it can take ages sometimes. Even after spending a long time editing, I’m not always satisfied with the results. This can make the whole process feel draining.
3. Changing Algorithms
This might sound a bit strange, but when I used to post on Threads, I would get at least 50 likes on any post. Now, even when I post, I might get only 3 likes. This shift has made it less fun. While I take photos for the joy of it, I do enjoy the validation from others as well.
How I Plan to Fix It
For the first issue, I’ll start using a smaller camera. Luckily, I have a compact digital camera, the Ricoh GR III, so instead of using the bulky Sony, I can carry that around.
For the second issue, I might try using presets to speed up the editing process. This could help make editing less time-consuming and more enjoyable.
As for the third reason, I think I just need to be patient and keep posting consistently. Over time, the social media algorithms will recognize my activity again.
Let’s get back to it and rekindle my passion for photography!
